Why are abrasivejets suddenly becoming so popular?
If abrasivejet machining has so many clear advantages, why is it only now becoming popular? The answer lies not in the abrasivejet process, but in controlling the process. Until now, using an abrasivejet has required a combination of complex programming skills and experienced operators. The linear speed of the abrasivejet nozzle must be varied for changes in the shape of the part. Abrupt changes in speed or excessive speed can result in poor quality. In the past, using abrasivejet machining required manual development of a program to control speeds along the tool path. Even the best program, however, also needed an experienced abrasivejet operator to control the speed of the abrasivejet. As the abrasivejet moved along the path, the operator would manually adjust the speed of the abrasivejet nozzle to optimize the machining process. If the speed was too fast, edge quality and accuracy suffered. If it was too slow, accuracy and time would be lost. If the abrasivejet nozzle went through a corner too quickly, a poorly formed, or incomplete cut could result. As a result, abrasive jets were reserved for low-tolerance large runs, where hundreds of parts were created with a well-tested program, or for materials that couldn't be machined in any other way. But this was before the OMAX JetMachining® Center simplified the process, and made the power of abrasivejet machining available in an easy-to-use tool.
